A Christmas Village Starts with 1 House...

I've meant to do this for a couple of years or so now, create my own Christmas village to go under my Christmas tree. Designed in Inkscape then cut on the Cricut using the SCAL program, this is the first house I've made, and I must say I'm pretty happy with it!

I stood it on a light box so I could get an idea of what it would look like with a little light inside it. I left a small mouse hole on the back of the house for the wires to go in and out of. I haven't decided if I'm going to leave them all white, make them all kraft or make them from patterned cardstock. How would you make yours? I hope you like it, click the image for a larger view :)

ETA: To answer Anonymous's question, yes, this was cut from white cardstock, but it's very heavy weight. I don't know what it would be in the US pounds system, but here in Europe it's probably 240 or 300 gsm.

Am so looking forward to seeing how your little village turns out Dan. I expect you will have a theme for it. If I was using clear lights to shine through I would alcohol ink some acetate for the windows so they looked like stain glass. But then, what the hell do I know.......lol Annette

Oh Dan, this is just the cutest little house! If it were me doing a village, I would make them different...some white, some craft paper, some patterned.....oh! I could very well get carried away!! LOL Whatever you decide to do will be right......and look lovely! Take pictures when you finish so we all can see!

Love it. Did you make this out of plain white cardstock, or do you have something to stiffen it up?

I think in kraft they would have a warm feel and then I would add PP in spots, they would kinda be gingerbread like then. Can't wait to see how it all turns out!

That's so cute! Please do show us when you have them done!!

I'm not sure what I would do... I think I like the idea of Kraft better than white (I just love Kraft paper and I think it looks great with Christmas reds and greens)- and hey! it would match your wrapping paper! :-) My second choice would be the patterned cardstock but it would depend on the patterns, I suppose.

Well done- thanks for sharing!! :-)

Looooovin' your house, Dan! Fab design you've got there. The kraft would look great with some "snow" on the roofs. I was also thinking that since you have a fair share of windows and cutouts, and the lights look so great from the inside.... wouldn't it be neat to put patterned paper or collaged stamped paper on the *inside*... would draw people right up to peep inside.

How very cool, Dan!! I would start with all kraft ... but, then I know me .. I'd start adding some PP here, some AI there ... and DI's everywhere! *lol*

Love it. I would add lots of different embellishments to different colored house. Patterned paper, glitter, fake snow. What fun!

And when will we be able to get our hands on these adorable little houses??? Please make them avaiable and soon, please. I would love to make a village for my mantle. I would use patterned paper and distress ink (of course) and try to make it look like an old European village. I was in Lacock (can't remember spelling) a few years ago and just fell in love with the place. That's what I would try to duplicate.

fantastic - the light box idea is excellent and the houses will look very cosy!

These are just fabulous Dan! I love the idea of them in plain paper, really makes the simple decorations stand out :)

What a great idea, I am looking forward to seeing the finished village. You could get a train on a track to go around them like you see on American Christmas movies.

Dan this is lovely. I think a few in white would look very wintery whereas in kraft they would have a warmer feel.

Your house is nice. I like the white and Kraft. If I were doing it I would mix them up. When I look down any street the houses are not all the same so I would do some white and some...other colors. But then again...that is just me. I know it will turn out fantastic what ever you decide to do them in.

Hi Dan! So lovely to see you back in action. I did a look up to see what 240 - 300gsm would be in American paper and it looks like it would be 89 - 111 pound cover. Here is a link to a web site that gives the comparisons: http://www.paper-garden.ca/paper_weights.php
And thanks for the download file for this. What fun!
