Shiver me timbers and avast behind!

The theme over on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge is "Nautical Nonsense", so time for you landlubbers to get out your sea legs and jump into the waves!  Alternatively, you could just go to your craft space and make something sea-related for the challenge and you could win a prize! :)

I've had this nautical themed stamp set from PaperArtsy for ages and have been waiting for an excuse to use it, so this project was perfect.

I started out by applying some paint through a couple of Tim Holtz layering stencils and once it was dry I inked over the top with Distress inks.  I stamped the ship onto the background with Archival ink and then restamped it on white card, tore out some strips from the design and fixed them onto the background in the appropriate places.

I tore a strip from a sheet of Simon Says Stamp vintage encyclopedia paper and used the Printer's Alphabet stamps for the line from a Christmas carol and fixed it in place on my card.  I absolutely love that printer's font, I first saw it on Tammy Tutterow's blog and knew immediately that I had to have it!  I think it's been retired now but you can still pick it up in some places.

I stamped the ship again and cut out the hull and fish and decoupaged them on top, before finally stamping again, colouring the fish with distress inks, cutting it out and decoupaging again for a final layer.  The fish's eye was highlighted with a white pen.  I coloured a matte with Fired Brick distress ink and mounted the two layers on my blank card.  Oh, I almost forgot!  For an added Christmassy touch I stamped some holly with Peeled Paint distress ink on the torn strips. :)

Supplies I used included:
(I can't get the encyclopedia paper to go into the linky thing, but you can find it here.)

Our ever-generous sponsor Simon Says Stamp is offering a $50 gift voucher as the prize again this week, just make something for the challenge and you could the winner! The winner will be chosen at random from those who enter the challenge, so why not give it a try? At the very least why not head over to the Challenge Blog to see how the other members of the design team have interpreted this weeks theme! :)

Fabulous card Dan. There is so much texture and interest on this - the spotty background goes really well with the spots on the fish.

This is really wonderful. So much to look at! Thanks for your kind comment on my blog. I actually entered the get well card with the octopus paper into the challenge from my blog, and then I picked my next favorite 4, and entered them directly from flikr, with links back to the challenge and my blog. I hope I did it right.

Hi Dan! I absolutely love this card! What a clever take on a traditional Christmas theme. You're always so great at thinking outside the box. Turning the fish into a ship was brilliant and I love the whimsicality and depth that you created. The sentiment is perfect, too! It's always a joy to see what you come up with every week.
