Video Tutorial - Sure Cuts a Lot 2 First Look

Craft Edge released a comprehensive new version of their Sure Cuts a Lot software today. Those who visit my blog regularly will know what a huge fan I am of this program. It opens up whole new creative ways to use your Cricut, allowing you to use any of the TrueType fonts on your PC to cut words and titles, as well as designs you make yourself or download from the internet.

Among the new features are multiple selections and groupings, support for multiple layers and pages, vertical typing, customizable workspace arrangement and a quick and easy Autotrace function.

I haven't had too much time to play, so there may be more things that I haven't discovered yet, but one thing I am sure of, I LOVE IT! :)

Edit: I can't, in all conscious, leave this post to stand in it's original form. After some time using SCAL 2, it seems there are quite a few bugs in it. Hopefully Craft Edge release an update soon to fix some of the problems with it! (I will still love it once that's done!)
Breaking news:
I've heard that Craft Edge hope to have an update available in the next couple of days or so :)

I would recommend watching the full screen version of this video, you won't see a lot of the detail in a smaller window! As it's a large file, if you play it and it stops part way through, it just means it hasn't fully downloaded to your computer yet, so be patient :)

Thanks so much, Dan. You made this all look so easy. I am so excited that I will be able to get more use from SCAL because I am greatly intimidated by Inkscape. Thanks for sharing.

Great job Dan lovely info but can you also tell us how do you upgrade from version 1 to 2 or do you have re-purchase? Love your tutorials they have taught me so much and are easy to follow. Also loved the free regular cut files when you were doing them.

Dan,
I see you've heard it many times...but thanks so much for the video. You do make it easy to understand. I haven't used my SCAL program a lot because I've had a little difficulty figuring it all out. Do you have other tutorials? I'm trying to figure out how to layer a welded word - where I have one color on the bottom and a different color on top in thinner letters. I haven't had much luck with that.

Hi Dan
Great Job! this scal 2 is amazing. How does one get it? I have the original scal and I thought that was good.
Thank you personally for taking time to make videos for us visual learners to understand! Bravo!

what can I say Dan - you are just awesome! Thank you for explaining this to me - I had missed the rollout, came in to see all the e-mails and immediately looked for you! You must be a teacher because as Laurel said, you're a natural.

Wow Dan, this is a great tutorial.
I'm been unsure about purchasing SCAL because my computer skills leave something to be desired. After viewing your video, I think even I can master this.
Hou should be a spokesman for SCAL.
Thanks.

Dan can you sort some confusion for me. I was told not to download the new version of design studio else it will stop my SCAL working. Now I have downloaded and paid for SCAL 2 but am wondering what to do about design studio as I am hoping to get some new carts which will necessitate the newer Design Studio but I dont want to loose SCAL, please advise.

Dan said...

It isn't Design Studio itself that causes the problem Liz, it's if it needs you to update your Cricut. I've heard no one else mention any problems with DS, but I don't have it myself so can't really advise you. I suggest you email support@craftedge.com and ask them, they're usually pretty quick to reply.

Kathie said...

That was super! Thanks for the tutorial! Love the trace thingy.

Hi Dan. I heard you mention Inkscape to get a .jpg or .bmp outline. I just got SCAL. Is it just getting them as a .jpg or.bmp to import into SCAL? (Im using the older version). I just wondered if I could do the same in photoshop.

Lalia Harris said...

Thank you!!! I'm glad you're back in action and updating your blog. Your information is great. Your explanation of layers vs pages is excellent & just what I needed. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about autotrace next!

Rosemary said...

wow, I just watched the video and I'm ready to update. I haven't used my SCAL as much as I wanted to because of my confusion with Inkscape..So glad I can now bypass that!!..thank you so much for a great tutorial!!

Thanks Dan. I am new to Cricut and SCAL, but after viewing your tutorial, I am sure I can get the hang of it soon. Great video!

Bless you! Bless you! Thank you for your awesome tutorial. That was sooooooo helpful and it seems so easy to understand -- I think I can do. I'm going to try it tomorrow. Thanks again, and like everyone says "you're the best".

I just got the Cricut this week. I was almost sorry that I spent the money till I saw this video. I couldn't get it to do what I wanted. SCAL does do exactly what I want! I wanted to print something in an arch. I did that in Word Art. Screen print, saved as jpg, and traced the shapes. A couple of steps, but it comes out exactly the way I want!
