Video Tutorial - Creating Paper Piecing Files from a Coloured Image using Inkscape software (free from inkscape.org)

Someone asked me for hints on how to do that, and I thought that making a video would the quickets and clearest way to do that!

This will work for both the Cricut with SCAL and the Craft Robo (and related machines). Just remember that Inkscape saves as SVG by default, so if you're a Robo user, remember that when you save your files, you'll need to choose "Save As..." and then select DXF as your file type from the drop down list at the bottom of the save menu.

    Another useful tutorial, Dan. I primarily use Adobe Illustrator with my Craft Robo Pro, but I am finding your Inkscape tutorials interesting and I have now downloaded the software to try. I have to say it is easier to learn than Illustrator - and very much cheaper too! ;-)

    Very clear and concise instructions, well presented. Kudos to you, sir.

    Thank you so much for explaining things in terms that are so very easy to follow. After yesterday's tutorial I gave it a try and then went crazy finding files to turn into diecuts. And they were diecuts that cut perfectly. I am so excited!!!! And I actually cut some in colors, too. Didn't know the best way to save layers to bring them into the Silhouette software though. Thanks for today's lesson. This helps lots.

    WOW what a great tutorial. One question though. When cutting these out in SCAL, do you open them one at a time and cut? I've had problems repiecing and gettin things to fit together properly if I don't include all the pieces in a single SVG file. Has anyone else had that trouble?

    Thank you so much, Dan! I was trying to figure out how to do this. Quick question for you, is there any easy way to delete part of the design from each colored layer? For instance, I'm working on a cupcake and the yellow part is just the flame on the candle; however, this method makes a yellow cutout of the entire cupcake. If there are several colors and it does this for each layer, that's a lot of printing and stacking when you really only need a part of the design in each color. Know what I mean? Thank you again for this tutorial though! I'm another step closer to what I'm trying to achieve!

    I just found your blog, am thinking about downloading inkscape as I have some scanned images I want to work with, your tutorials answered the questions I had about whether or not a person could convert a scanned image into something I could work with on my cricut machine, thank you so much and know I'll be spending lots of time on your blog and videos
